Reflection
The challenge to change and its measure of success will be determined by the roll-out of the ePortfolio plan. It can be rolled out at the beginning of any semester, but the Fall semester is ideal because students and faculty will have two consecutive long semesters to adjust to the plan and the consistency of the two semesters will allow more opportunity to address any problems or difficulties that students and faculty might confront.
The Five Stages of Change
- Getting Clear – I’ve spent much of the last year sharing my innovation plan concepts with several colleagues, including my department chair and college dean, and I have received mostly positive feedback.
- Model the ePortfolio process used at the University Press and train staff and faculty on how to build their own ePortfolios if they do not already have on.
- Adopt the WIG of have all Communication majors build a functioning ePortfolio by semester’s end.
- Determine Lead and Lag measures
- Design and install scoreboard in department chair’s office or department conference room.
- Hold weekly or bi-weekly WIG meeting to measure progress
- Launch – Ideally, launch would begin at the start of a long semester, preferably Fall, but Spring will do.
- ePortfolio initiative becomes aspect of student advising.
- Faculty and student experts will be trained to offer student and faculty support.
- Weekly influencer meeting/communication to assess successes and obstacles.
- Adoption – the critical part of adoption occurs when rolling out the initiative, that is why I think a Fall semester roll out is optimal over a Spring semester. Faculty training and support will be paramount and summer provides a little more lee-way and flexibility for training and development.
- Identifying and supporting struggling instructor.
- Identifying non-compliant/reluctant instructors and helping them to comply.
- Tracking scoreboard progress.
- Assess successes and obstacles. Adapt program for effectiveness and efficiency.
- Optimization – Team meeting will emphasize success and progress and ways to address obstacles.
- Highlight innovative strategies and student/instructor success and recognize good implementation examples.
- Plan success goals should be recognized and rewarded.
- Habits – Assess success throughout the course of the implementation process. Take time for reflection and brainstorm new WIGs and develop new initiatives.
- Recognize and acknowledge lead innovators.
- Compile data from the ePortfolio initiative to be presented to all the stakeholders
- Compile feedback from graduates on ePortfolio use and receptiveness.
- Use summer for initiative adaptions, updates and faculty/staff support.
Installing 4DX in Lamar Communication Department
WIG
– Implement ePortfolios for all incoming/transfer Communication majors for Fall 2017 semester. Students will post 6 authentically published written stories, audio story packages or video story packages.
Lead Measures
- Schedule faculty development support set-up time period.
- Require teachers to assign ePortfolio items for grades.
- Meet with faculty members weekly/bi-weekly to review implementation.
Lag Measures
- Monitor compliance bi-monthly
- Students will submit ePortfolio for departmental and peer review
- Students and faculty will submit survey to identify successes and negatives and provide brainstorming ideas for next WIG.
Scoreboard
– Scoreboard is updated every Monday
- Scoreboard tally is distributed electronically to all faculty and students using ePortfolios.
Accountability
- Schedule weekly/bi-weekly team leader meeting to discuss plan implementation
- Review scoreboard and address any weaknesses.
Discipline 1
The Wildly Important Goal:
- To implement an ePortfolio component to all Communication majors
- and to create a significant learning environment that is student-centered using the COVA model.
Discipline 2
Act on Lead Measures:
- Lead Measure – ePortfolios will show progress and create monitoring system for quality and context of student work and better prepare students for job market prospects.
- Lead Measure – student progress can be monitored bi-weekly to semi-weekly.
Discipline 3
Scoreboard
- I think a bar chart or inforgraphic could be created and used to showcase participation percentages and completeness.
Discipline 4
Cadence
- Weekly review the plan agenda and review the scoreboard to discuss successes and obstacles.
